Jenna Ortega is opening up about her beauty routine and how makeup and hair play a vital role not only in her personal life but also in her work as an actress. The 22-year-old star — best known for her role as Wednesday Addams in Netflix’s hit series Wednesday — believes that beauty is much more than appearance. For her, it’s a form of self-expression and a way of representing who you are.
Beauty as Self-Expression
In an interview with Who What Wear, Ortega explained how beauty choices help her build a connection with the characters she portrays on screen.
“Beauty is the way that you’re choosing to represent yourself. It’s a pretty important piece of the puzzle,” Ortega said.
She revealed that collaborating with hair and makeup artists is one of her favorite parts of preparing for a role. Together, they decide on a character’s look, which she sees as part of the character’s daily routine.
“It’s very insightful to know what matters to them and how they want to be perceived,” Ortega continued. “When I prepare for a role, I often experiment with the makeup myself. It gives me the experience of putting it on and discovering what feels natural.”
According to Ortega, beauty can even guide character development. Sometimes, the wrong makeup look can reveal what a character is not supposed to be. She recalled her time playing Wednesday Addams, where the smallest details made a difference.
“With Wednesday, it was obvious if something wasn’t pale enough, dark enough, or grey enough,” she explained. “When the makeup is off, it’s hard to stay in character because you feel out of place.”
Jenna Ortega on Bad Hair Days
Although Jenna Ortega is admired for her flawless red-carpet looks and unique style, she admits she struggles with something many people can relate to: bad hair days.
The actress confessed that she dislikes being photographed when her hair doesn’t look right.
“A bad hair day really messes you up,” Ortega admitted. “If that happens, I’ll either wash my hair again or wear a hat. I don’t like my hair slicked back. I need messy bits and pieces. If it doesn’t listen, then you won’t hear from me.”
Authenticity Above Perfection
Despite being one of the most photographed young stars in Hollywood, Ortega embraces imperfection as part of her beauty philosophy. She values authenticity over perfection and sees her look as a reflection of her personality.
Her candid approach is a refreshing reminder that even celebrities deal with insecurities and beauty mishaps. For Ortega, confidence isn’t about always looking perfect but about staying true to yourself — both on and off screen.
