Ed Sheeran has achieved another remarkable milestone in his career, becoming the first international artist to perform a concert in Bhutan. On Friday, January 24, Sheeran took the stage at Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu, marking a historic moment for the South Asian country.
Reflecting on this groundbreaking event, the 33-year-old “Bad Habits” singer shared a heartfelt Instagram post the following day, featuring highlights from his time in Bhutan. “Had the honour to be the first ever international artist to play Bhutan last night,” he wrote. “What a gig, what a country, what a beautiful place with incredible people.” His excitement didn’t stop there, as he jokingly added, “Lemme know if I can move there, please and thank you.”
A Historic Performance
The four-time Grammy winner’s visit to Bhutan clearly left a lasting impression. In the Instagram video, Sheeran described his awe at being part of such a significant cultural moment. “It’s mad that this is the first international concert here,” he remarked while standing by the stage. “I hope that there’s many more to come.”
The concert footage captured Sheeran electrifying the crowd, who danced and sang along enthusiastically. Addressing the audience during the show, Sheeran said, “I’ve been all around the world, been to some amazing places, but I’ve never done anything like this before.”
He further reflected on his journey, adding, “To be able to visit a country like Bhutan, to stand onstage and bring this show here – it’s truly special. I can remember playing to an empty room, and now I get to play the first international concert in Bhutan. Ever.”
A Royal Welcome
During his stay, Sheeran had the unique opportunity to dine with Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar and Queen Jetsun Pema. Recalling the experience, he shared, “The king and queen said, ‘We just want people coming to the country who love, respect, and understand the ideals of Bhutan.’”
Feeling honored by the invitation, Sheeran expressed his gratitude and eagerness to perform for such a welcoming audience. “This is so my jam,” he added, clearly moved by the experience.
Looking Ahead
The Bhutan concert comes as part of Sheeran’s Mathematics World Tour, which began in April 2022 and is set to conclude in 2025. Back in July 2024, the singer announced that the tour would wrap up with major shows across Europe.
“2025 is the end of the Mathematics Tour,” he said in an Instagram video, promising to visit “most of the other places we haven’t been to yet.” The European leg will begin in Madrid, Spain, on May 5, with stops in Rome, Oslo, Zurich, Stockholm, Copenhagen, and more. His final European show is scheduled for September 9 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
As Sheeran continues to bring his music to fans around the globe, his performance in Bhutan stands out as a testament to his ability to connect with audiences in new and meaningful ways.
