Ana de Armas is stepping into the John Wick universe as the lead in the upcoming spinoff, Ballerina. The film, set to release on June 6, 2025, will expand the world of assassins and introduce new characters while bringing back fan-favorites.
In Ballerina, de Armas plays Eve Macarro, a skilled assassin trained by the Ruska Roma syndicate. The story follows her mission for revenge against those who killed her family. This character was first introduced in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019), played by Unity Phelan.
One of the most exciting aspects of the spinoff is the return of Keanu Reeves as John Wick. In a recent interview, de Armas shared her excitement about working with him again, saying:
“I have had the pleasure of working with Keanu three times already, and Ballerina was particularly special because it was me stepping into his world. The world of John Wick, which is so loved by the fans.”
De Armas first collaborated with Reeves in the 2015 thriller Knock Knock. Reflecting on their partnership, she added:
“I respect and appreciate Keanu as an artist, as a person, and as a friend. He’s a leader on set and always a gentleman.”
How Does John Wick Return?
Although John Wick appeared to die at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4, Ballerina takes place between Chapter 3 and Chapter 4. This timeline allows Reeves to reprise his role without disrupting the franchise’s continuity.
Franchise producer Basil Iwanyk revealed that de Armas played a major role in bringing Reeves on board. Once she joined the project, Reeves became “really excited” about appearing in the spinoff.
De Armas praised Reeves’ dedication, saying:
“His creativity and input during rehearsals are always inspiring. He knows these films better than anyone. Seeing him on set as John Wick was surreal – I’ll never forget that day.”
A Star-Studded Cast
Ballerina will also feature several familiar faces from the John Wick series:
- Ian McShane returns as Winston Scott, the manager of the Continental Hotel.
- Lance Reddick, in one of his final roles, reprises his part as Charon, the Continental’s concierge.
- Anjelica Huston is back as the Director, the head of the Ruska Roma crime syndicate.
New cast members include Norman Reedus, Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, and David Castañeda.
What to Expect from Ballerina
Directed by Len Wiseman (Underworld), the film will deliver the intense action fans expect. Producer Chad Stahelski, who directed the main John Wick films, oversaw additional action scenes during reshoots.
De Armas has described the movie as “dangerous” and “sexy,” promising it will stay true to the John Wick legacy while offering a fresh perspective.
Fans can mark their calendars for June 6, 2025, when Ballerina hits theaters, promising a thrilling new chapter in the John Wick saga.
