Sofia Vergara, known for her comedic brilliance in Modern Family, made a dramatic pivot in her career with her role as Griselda Blanco in Netflix’s Griselda. The 52-year-old actress earned widespread acclaim—and nominations at both the Golden Globe and Emmy Awards—for her portrayal of the notorious “Cocaine Godmother.” Yet despite the buzz, Vergara walked away from awards season empty-handed, and she’s not hiding her disappointment.
A Critically Acclaimed Performance Without the Win
In Griselda, Vergara delivered a transformative performance that showcased her range as an actress. Playing the fierce and feared Colombian drug queenpin required not only intense emotional depth but also physical transformation using prosthetics. Critics praised her for taking such a bold step outside of comedy. Still, when awards season rolled around, recognition came in the form of nominations—but no wins.
During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Vergara candidly addressed the letdown. Fallon began by celebrating her achievements:
“Can we talk about how great you are? Last time you were here, we talked about Griselda, and then bang—you get nominated for a Golden Globe and an Emmy. Congratulations!”
Vergara’s response, however, was raw and humorous:
“And I didn’t win any of it! I didn’t win any of it.”
Fallon attempted to console her by emphasizing the honor of being nominated, but Vergara wasn’t having it:
“It matters,” she said firmly, with a wry smile. “Jodie Foster took everything.”
A Playful Confrontation at the Golden Globes
Vergara’s good-humored frustration carried over to the Golden Globes in January. As Jodie Foster won Best Actress in a Limited Series for her role in True Detective: Night Country, Vergara jokingly rose from her seat and playfully shouted, “Oh no, give me one!” before walking toward the stage.
Recalling the moment on The Tonight Show, she said,
“I tried to stop her in the middle of the Golden Globes, but it was too late.”
When Fallon asked what she said to Foster, Vergara replied,
“‘Give it to me.’ She took everything.”
Jodie Foster took the jest in stride and even gave Vergara a shout-out in her acceptance speech, saying,
“The greatest thing about being this age and being in this time is having a community of all these people, especially you, Sofia.”
Will She Return to Drama?
While audiences embraced her as Griselda, Vergara isn’t so sure about returning to such intense dramatic roles.
“I don’t want to be back for more—for what? They’re not going to give me the award,” she said half-jokingly.
She reflected on the demands of the role:
“It was very difficult. There’s nothing like doing Modern Family and comedy. Maybe I’ll do drama again, but I don’t know if I want to do it with the prosthetics. Why don’t you do it? It’s difficult.”
Despite the disappointment, Vergara’s role in Griselda marks a significant milestone in her career. It highlights her talent, depth, and ability to surprise both critics and fans. And while she may not have taken home the trophy this time, her performance left an undeniable mark on the industry.
