Johnny Depp has made rare and revealing comments about his relationship with Amber Heard and the defamation trial that dominated headlines worldwide. In a candid interview with The Sunday Times, Depp spoke about the personal cost of the public battle and why he felt he had to speak the truth—no matter the consequences.
A Relationship That Captivated the World
The Pirates of the Caribbean star met Amber Heard in 2009 while filming The Rum Diary. Their relationship reportedly began in 2011 or early 2012. By January 2014, the couple was engaged, and they married in February 2015.
But their marriage was short-lived. The two separated in 2016, leading to a years-long legal battle that would become one of the most talked-about celebrity trials in history.
The Trial That Shocked Hollywood
In 2018, Heard wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post describing herself as a survivor of domestic abuse. Though Depp was not named, he sued Heard in 2019 for defamation, claiming the article falsely portrayed him as an abuser.
Heard counter-sued for $100 million. The trial began in 2022 and quickly gained international attention, with media coverage intensifying as both sides made explosive claims.
The jury ultimately ruled in favor of Depp, awarding him $10.35 million in damages. Heard was awarded $2 million for one of her counterclaims.
Depp: “No Good Deed Goes Unpunished”
Three years after the trial, Depp has opened up about the emotional impact of the ordeal. Speaking to The Sunday Times, he said:
“If you’re a sucker like I am, sometimes you look in a person’s eye and see some sadness, some lonely thing and you feel you can help that person. But no good deed goes unpunished.”
He hinted that what he saw in Heard was deeper than it appeared:
“It manifests itself in other ways. And the interesting thing is that it is merely a sliver of my life I have chosen to explore.”
The Drive to Defend His Name
Depp revealed that staying silent was never an option:
“Look, it had gone far enough. Everyone was saying, ‘It’ll go away!’ But I can’t trust that. What will go away? The fiction pawned around the f***ing globe? No, it won’t.”
His concern, he explained, was for his family and legacy:
“If I don’t try to represent the truth, it will be like I’ve actually committed the acts I am accused of. And my kids will have to live with it.”
The actor said he wasn’t nervous the night before the trial:
“If you’re just speaking the truth? Roll the dice.”
“I’ll Fight Until the End”
Despite the toll the trial took, Depp had no regrets:
“I’ll fight until the bitter f***ing end. And if I end up pumping gas? That’s all right. I’ve done that before.”
Depp also described himself as a “crash test dummy” for the MeToo movement:
“I sponged it, took it all in. And I wanted from the hundreds of people I’ve met in that industry to see who was playing it safe.”
