Bradley Cooper to Direct Comedy-Drama Inspired by John Bishop’s Life: Is This Thing On?

Hollywood A-lister Bradley Cooper is stepping back into the director’s chair for his third feature film—this time helming a comedy-drama inspired by the real-life journey of British comedian John Bishop.

Following the critical and commercial successes of A Star Is Born (2018) and Maestro (2023), Cooper is now set to direct and co-star in Is This Thing On?, a heartfelt narrative that blends humor, heartbreak, and personal reinvention. The film is written by actor and comedian Will Arnett alongside Mark Chappell (Flaked, The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret), and will star a diverse and notable cast including Laura Dern, Sean Hayes, Amy Sedaris, Andra Day, and Ciarán Hinds.

A Story Rooted in Real-Life Struggles and Humor

The plot centers around a man who, after the emotional fallout of a divorce, finds unexpected purpose in the world of stand-up comedy. This storyline closely mirrors John Bishop’s own path to fame. Before becoming a household name in British comedy, Bishop was a pharmaceutical rep whose life took a turn after a surprise stand-up appearance at an open mic night in Manchester. The moment, born from personal pain, was a breakthrough that changed the course of his life.

Bishop, who is on board as an executive producer for the film, has long been open about how comedy became his form of emotional recovery. “It was therapy. I got on stage and I spoke honestly—and people laughed,” Bishop shared in a retrospective interview.

A New Direction for Cooper

While Cooper has proven himself to be a powerful storyteller behind the camera, Is This Thing On? marks the first time he will also operate the camera himself, further immersing himself in the cinematic process. Known for his intense preparation and methodical approach to filmmaking, the actor-turned-director has reportedly taken a hands-on role in shaping the film’s visual and emotional tone.

The project reflects Cooper’s growing interest in deeply personal, character-driven stories that highlight vulnerability, transformation, and resilience—themes that have resonated with audiences in his previous directorial works.

Star-Studded Cast and Production Buzz

Will Arnett, who also plays a supporting role, brings his signature wit and comedic timing to the script, while Oscar-winner Laura Dern is expected to deliver another emotionally grounded performance. Production began in February 2025 in New York and wrapped in April. Though the filming process stirred a few minor disturbances among local residents—prompting reports of late-night shoots disrupting neighborhoods—the buzz around the film is largely positive.

Industry insiders expect Is This Thing On? to be a contender for upcoming film festival circuits and possibly awards season, especially considering the powerhouse talent both in front of and behind the camera.

A Film About Reinvention, Comedy, and Healing

Is This Thing On? is more than just a comedy. It’s a reflective exploration of how humor can emerge from pain, and how life’s unexpected detours can lead to newfound identity and purpose. With Bradley Cooper’s proven cinematic sensibility and a narrative grounded in real experience, the film is already one of the most anticipated releases of the coming year.
