Hollywood and sports fans were recently surprised to hear that The Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev and Olympic snowboarder Shaun White have reportedly ended their engagement. The couple, who had been together for five years, announced their engagement in October 2024.
A source close to the pair revealed, “It was a mutual decision and wasn’t an easy one, but it was made with love and a deep respect for one another.” Neither Dobrev nor White have publicly confirmed the split.
Signs of the Split
Fans first noticed potential trouble when Dobrev attended the Eternity premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival on September 7 without her 5-carat engagement ring. Additionally, she unpinned her proposal post from Instagram, which had been featured since White proposed in October 2024.
The couple was last photographed together on August 31, 2025, while running errands in Los Angeles.
A Look Back at Their Relationship
Nina Dobrev and Shaun White first met briefly at an awards show in 2012 but only became close in 2019 after both were invited to a Tony Robbins event in Florida. Their romantic relationship began that same year, and they moved in together during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. White made their relationship official on Instagram in May 2020, sharing a playful moment when Dobrev gave him a quarantine haircut.
The pair frequently supported one another through personal and professional milestones. For example, White helped Dobrev recover from a biking accident that resulted in a knee fracture, while Dobrev stood by White during his retirement from professional snowboarding in 2022 after the Beijing Winter Olympics.
The Surprise Engagement
Shaun White proposed to Dobrev in October 2024 during a romantic dinner at The Golden Swan in New York City. He initially told Dobrev they were attending a CFDA/Vogue event hosted by Anna Wintour. The surprise proposal featured a stunning 5-carat Lorraine Schwartz diamond ring. Sharing the news at the time, White posted on Instagram: “She said YES.” Dobrev celebrated the moment, captioning her post: “RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé.”
Throughout their relationship, the couple were frequently seen on red carpets, attending international events, and sharing glimpses of their life together on social media. From vacations abroad to festival appearances, they often showcased the bond they shared.
While their engagement may have ended, fans remember the genuine support and care they offered each other during their five years together.
