Meryl Streep, the three-time Oscar winner and acting legend, finally graced the stage of “Saturday Night Live” for the first time. Her long-awaited debut took place during the show’s star-studded 50th anniversary special, making the event even more unforgettable.
A Star-Packed Sketch: “Close Encounter”
Streep joined the recurring “Close Encounter” sketch, a fan-favorite led by former “SNL” cast member Kate McKinnon. In the sketch, McKinnon’s character, Colleen Rafferty, hilariously recounts her less-than-pleasant alien abduction experience. Alongside her were Woody Harrelson and Pedro Pascal, whose characters had much more enjoyable encounters with the extraterrestrials. The trio’s bizarre stories unfold as they are interrogated by military officials, played by Jon Hamm and Aidy Bryant.
Streep Steals the Show
Making her entrance as Colleen Rafferty’s mother, Streep embraced the comedic absurdity of the moment. Dressed in a pastel Hawaiian shirt similar to Colleen’s, complete with a cigarette and a styrofoam cup, she delivered a side-splitting performance. Her character, Colleen Senior, shared her own X-rated alien abduction story, humorously explaining how the aliens eventually “lost interest” and shoved her into a closet.
Streep’s comedic timing shone when Pascal’s character flirtatiously called her a “good mother.” Without missing a beat, she quipped, “Yeah, well, a good mother can also be a bad girl,” turning flirtatiously toward him. The audience erupted in laughter.
Jack Nicholson’s Surprise Cameo
The episode also featured a rare appearance by Jack Nicholson. The 87-year-old Oscar winner, known for his iconic roles and signature sunglasses, introduced Adam Sandler, who performed a heartfelt and humorous original song celebrating “SNL”’s 50-year history. Nicholson’s cameo was a treat for fans, as he has kept a low profile in recent years.
Rumors Swirl Around Streep and Martin Short
Adding to the excitement, Martin Short returned to the “SNL” stage during the anniversary special, sparking rumors about a possible romance with Streep. While the speculation remains unconfirmed, their appearance in the same episode had fans buzzing.
Meryl Streep’s “Saturday Night Live” debut was nothing short of iconic. From her comedic prowess to her unexpected chemistry with the cast, she proved once again why she’s a legend in the entertainment industry.
