Depp is close to sealing a deal with Disney to return as Captain Jack Sparrow in a reboot of the iconic Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, with a release planned for Easter next year.
According to a senior Disney executive, the negotiations are in their final stages. The script is already complete, and Disney is ready to relaunch the multi-billion-pound franchise with Depp back in the lead.
“It’s very close to being a done deal,” the insider revealed. “This is a fresh start, and we want Johnny at the helm.”
The new film is expected to kick off a rebooted series, opening the door for several future sequels. This move signals a dramatic turnaround for Depp, who was previously dropped by Disney during his legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard.
Depp’s Career Rebound Gains Momentum
After losing a libel case in the UK, Depp was removed from several high-profile projects. The case involved accusations of abuse, which he denied. However, he later won a defamation trial in the United States against Heard, helping to restore his reputation.
Now, at age 61, Depp is actively rebuilding his Hollywood career. Last week, Variety celebrated his return to the industry as he began filming Day Drinker, an action thriller co-starring Penelope Cruz and directed by Marc Webb.
Meanwhile, discussions with Disney have been ongoing. The studio prepared two versions of the new Pirates script — one featuring Depp, and one without. Recently, the version without him was reportedly scrapped.
“They’re moving forward with the script written for Johnny,” the executive added. “They believe audiences want to see him return.”
What to Expect from the Pirates Reboot
This sixth installment will serve as a full reboot of the beloved adventure saga. With a fresh plot and Depp’s return, Disney is betting big on reigniting the franchise for a new generation.
Production could begin later this year, aiming for a wide release around Easter 2026. Fans have long called for Depp’s comeback, and early reactions online suggest widespread excitement.
The franchise, which has already earned over £3.4 billion worldwide, appears ready to set sail once again — with Captain Jack Sparrow at the wheel.
