Machine Gun Kelly, real name Colson Baker, has revealed that he turned down an audition for the hit horror movie Sinners because the script required him to say a racial slur. The rapper-turned-actor made the disclosure during a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, citing a moment in the audition process that crossed a personal line.
MGK on Why He Said “No”
The 35-year-old entertainer, known for his roles in The Dirt and Bird Box, was originally approached to audition for a vampire character in Sinners, which was released in July and has since grossed over $365 million worldwide.
Speaking candidly, MGK said:
“I was supposed to be in Sinners. The vampire — the one in the house. They had me set up to do the audition, but the script had me saying the n-word, and I wouldn’t do it.”
Baker, who has a 16-year-old daughter, Casie Colson Baker, added that he felt uncomfortable with the line and made the choice to walk away, even though the film had the potential to be a major career move.
The Role He Rejected
While Baker didn’t name the character specifically, he appears to have been considered for the role of Bert, a fictional KKK member turned vampire in the film. In the final version of Sinners, that character is played by Peter Dreimanis.
The film, which stars Michael B. Jordan, is set in 1932 Mississippi and follows twin brothers who return to their hometown to build a music venue—only to face a supernatural evil tied to their past and the region’s brutal history of racism.
A Consistent Stance Against Racial Slurs
MGK’s decision isn’t out of character. In a 2011 interview with XXL Magazine, he condemned the casual use of racial slurs in hip-hop—particularly referencing then-controversial rapper V-Nasty. At the time, he said:
“My daughter’s Black. My whole team, with the exception of one of my managers, is Black. It’s a subject you just kinda grow up and respect.”
That principle carried into his professional choices over a decade later.
What’s Next for MGK in Film?
Though he didn’t appear in Sinners, MGK says he’s still passionate about acting and believes that the right opportunity will come along in due time:
“I have a lot of aspirations to be in movies. It just hasn’t panned out that way. It’ll align. The angels will put something in the works.”
Beyond acting, MGK is also embracing fatherhood again this year, following the birth of his second daughter, Saga, with actress Megan Fox.
