Did Miley Cyrus Really Hide Drug Spending as ‘Vintage Clothes’?

The singer opens up about addiction, finances, and the strange ways fame warps reality.

Miley Cyrus has never been one to filter her truth—and now, in a recent podcast appearance, she’s revealed a surprisingly calculated method she once used to hide drug expenses from her accountant.

On the Every Single Album podcast, the 32-year-old artist explained that during a particularly chaotic phase of her career—around the release of her psychedelic album Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz in 2015—she had to find a discreet way to keep her accountant in the dark about her spending on drugs.

“The drugs were the biggest cost… To hide those from my accountant, we called them vintage clothes,” she shared.

The $15,000 “John Lennon” T-Shirt That Never Existed

Touring artists often make extravagant purchases, but Miley says she intentionally categorized her drug spending as high-ticket fashion items.

“Every time [my accountant] saw me, she’d be like, ‘Where’s that $15,000 original John Lennon T-shirt?’ And I’d be like, ‘Oh, it’s upstairs… It’s delicate,’” she laughed.

She added, “I bought a lot of vintage clothes that year.”

But her confession isn’t just quirky or humorous—it’s a window into how addiction can distort priorities, even among the rich and famous. It also underscores the mental gymnastics that come with trying to keep up appearances, financially and emotionally, in the public eye.

A Sobriety Journey That Started in 2019

Miley has been open about her struggles and growth. In 2020, she told Zane Lowe that she began her sobriety journey not because she had a problem with alcohol itself, but because of the decisions she made under its influence.

“I don’t have a problem with drinking. I have a problem with the decisions I make once I go past a certain level. I’ve just been wanting to wake up 100 percent, 100 percent of the time.”

Since getting sober in 2019, Cyrus has hit major milestones—most notably winning her first-ever Grammy in 2024 for Flowers, a song widely seen as a personal and emotional triumph.

From Hannah Montana to Healing

Miley’s story isn’t unique among child stars. Celebrities like Lindsay Lohan, Macaulay Culkin, and Amanda Bynes have all faced struggles after early fame. But what makes Miley stand out is her radical honesty and commitment to growth.

“I’m so glad I survived that time in my life,” she told the podcast. “I wouldn’t encourage anyone to go that hard, but I’m glad I got through it.”

Her story reminds us that beneath the headlines and glamour, celebrities often navigate the same inner battles—just with a much bigger spotlight.
